“The foundations of our society are increasingly challenged by intolerance, hate and mutual stereotyping,” said Regina Khidekel, Executive Director of the Russian American Cultural Center (RACC). “This rhetoric directly affects many of our recent and most vulnerable immigrants, such as young Russian-Jewish students on college campuses. Today, we are coming together to counter this rhetoric, both within and against our immigrant community, with a vision that builds upon historical examples of successful collaboration among our peoples, as well as between United States and Russia. The centenary of the events of 1917 reminds us that for Russians, the arts have been the major unifying and mobilizing force of resistance to autocracy, militarism, imperialism and bigotry. For almost 20 years, RACC has been promoting intercultural dialogue through our exhibitions, literary programs, annual film festivals, and other events that emphasized this aspect of the arts and their role in upholding human dignity in the Diaspora. With this forum and the initiatives that will be launched there, we will use this power of the arts and of intercultural dialogue to marginalize hate speech, help our nations develop innovative approaches toward rebuilding relations between Russian and American societies as well as between Ukrainians and Russians, and move toward a more fair and equitable integration of our immigrant communities into the cultural, economic, and civic institutions in New York.”
